breadth, dispersion, correlation, liquidity — all corporate-action adjusted
Every return on this page is adjusted for corporate actions, and that is not a detail. equity_daily is raw, and prev_close is simply the previous close rather than NSE's adjusted one — so a split or bonus becomes a real-looking return with nothing to flag it. Across the Nifty 500 over six years there are 127 log-returns beyond ±40% spanning 110 distinct symbols. Unadjusted, RELIANCE's five-year volatility reads 38.05% instead of 22.40%, its excess kurtosis 526 instead of 3.3, and INFY's maximum drawdown becomes −87.9% dated 2020 instead of −50.7% dated 2026 — the wrong number and the wrong year. Volatility is annualised over 247 trading days, this market's measured mean for 2015–2025, not the textbook 252.

Whole market, ETFs excluded; +/-5bp treated as unchanged. When this falls while the index rises, a handful of large names are carrying it.

Moving averages are built on back-adjusted closes. A raw 200-day average spanning a 1:2 split sits at roughly twice the price and pins the stock below its own average for two hundred consecutive sessions — on the latest session that difference is worth about two percentage points of the reading. Names without a full window are excluded rather than averaged short, which is why the two bases differ.

Average pairwise correlation is computed from the variance identity ρ = (σ²ₚ − σ̄²/N) / (σ̄²(1 − 1/N)) rather than from all 1,225 pairs. Validated against the direct computation on 2026-09-09: 0.1331 here against 0.1351 pairwise, and about 700× cheaper for a time series. The portfolio return is built from the constituents, not from the published index — the identity assumes both variances use the same weights, and Nifty 50 is float-cap weighted and top-heavy.

Equal-weighted, not capitalisation-weighted, because this database holds no shares outstanding and therefore no index weights. That makes it a read on the median constituent rather than on index impact, and the two differ: a sector can be green equal-weighted while its largest name drags the cap-weighted number negative. Sector coverage is the Nifty 500 only.

The sign is the opposite of the usual telling. Low delivery predicts higher next-day movement, monotonically across all five quintiles — a 43% spread from Q1 to Q5. That reads as speculative churn that keeps moving, not quiet accumulation by informed buyers. Calling this an “informed trading” signal would describe it backwards. Ranking happens within each session, which removes stock and date effects and leaves the purely cross-sectional question.

A market where ten names carry most of the turnover behaves very differently from one where they carry a sixth of it — the first is a handful of stocks with a market attached. Traded value, not market capitalisation: this database holds no shares outstanding, so size cannot be measured here at all.

Average absolute return per crore of turnover — how far the price moves for a given amount of trade. The median per name is used rather than the mean: one thin session dominates an annual average. Returns are corporate-action adjusted, because a single unadjusted split puts a 0.5 in the numerator and swamps everything else.

Survivorship is stated, not solved. equity_daily holds 5,409 distinct EQ symbols and only 2,678 still traded in September 2026. Cross-sections here use today's index membership, so a historical breadth reading is the breadth of today's constituents rather than of the index as it stood — against point-in-time membership for 2018, only 228 of 500 names overlap. The one table carrying membership history is a reconstruction that leaves Reliance out of the Nifty 50, so the choice was to say this plainly or to ship nothing.
